Benjamin Zand will present this 1-day live webinar titled, “Pipeline Geohazard Assessment,” on March 19, 2021.

Course Objective

This is an introductory course on various types of geohazard that can affect a pipeline and assessment of the effect of geohazard on pipeline integrity.

Pre-Requisites of the Course

Familiarity with stress, strains, deformation and their relationships

Course Outline

  1. Types of geohazard:
    1. landslide, ground subsidence,
    2. sinkhole,
    3. flood,
    4. frost heave,
    5. earthquake (includes liquefaction, tsunami, and fault crossing)
    6. expansive and collapsible soil,
    7. water and wind erosion, and
    8. shallow ground water level
  2. Fundamentals of Slope stability analysis
  3. Soil-pipe interaction analysis – describes the soil spring model for stress analysis of buried pipelines
  4. Acceptance criteria (stress-based vs strain-based acceptance criteria)
  5. Ground movement mitigation
  6. Ground movement monitoring
  7. Vortex-induced vibration
  8. Closing

Instructor Bio

Dr Zand has 20 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, geohazard assessment, stress analysis, pipeline integrity assessment, mechanics of composite material, and mathematical modeling. His experience includes stress and vibration analysis and monitoring for oil and gas transport pipelines and facility piping. Dr Zand has assisted pipeline operators with geohazard problems such as longwall mining subsidence, ground movement, sinkhole, earthquake, and fault crossing. Dr Zand has developed mitigation and monitoring programs for pipelines subjected to various geohazard conditions. He has assessed numerous pipelines subjected to vibration and cyclic loading from blast and construction. He previously worked with Kiefner & Associates, Inc. (2012 to 2019) and has recently joined RSI Pipeline Solutions, LLC. He has served as an instructor for Rock Mechanics course at Ohio State University.
