AC Mitigation Solutions

PIPELINE ENGINEERING SOFTWARE & INDUSTRY TRAINING THAT SET THE PRODUCTIVITY STANDARD

Tools for AC Mitigation

Midstream corrosion engineers, integrity engineers, and risk engineers face a never-ending battle with corrosive forces in the soil and in neighboring powerlines. Throughout the lifecycle of pipelines, engineers and operators must plan carefully and respond quickly to a wide range of AC-induced integrity challenges.

The PRCI AC Mitigation Toolbox (ACTB) allows teams to identify corrosion threats and design mitigation pipeline scenarios within minutes. The software can be used with unlimited pipelines, even multiple pipelines using the same right-of-way with high-voltage AC power lines.

Technical Toolboxes also offers packages that enhance and automate the workflow. Examples include plug-ins for Variable Depth of Cover, Barnes Multi-Layer Soil Resistivity, the AC Mitigation PowerTool (ACPT), and Cathodic Protection. ACPT streamlines segmentation and enables auto-calculation of distances and angles for each segment. It enables users to understand, model and mitigate the underground pipeline AC induced current integrity problem quickly.

AC Mitigation Challenges

Solutions by Role

Corrosion Analyses

Repeating calculations or changed parameters lead to duplicated workloads and long delays.

PRCI AC Mitigation Toolbox combined with Pipeline Toolbox’s Cathodic Protection module deliver resilient materials performance throughout the pipeline lifecycle.

Vast Pipeline Networks

Tens of thousands of miles of pipelines mean that data resides in offices across the continent.

The HUBPL enables quick and easy import of pipeline and powerline data, aligning your AC Mitigation Toolbox or PowerTool data with integrated GIS systems.

Software Compatibility

Data captured in one system has to be manually entered into each application that analyze it.

The HUBPL is an integrated solution that connects your data to our library of engineering tools, auto-loading data to the applications that deliver the analyses.

Data Automation

Low-quality data and calculation errors add risk and increase your QC workload.

Technical Toolboxes automates quality controls, unifies data storage, and controls calculation parameters so you can deliver accurate results consistently.

Knowledge Retention

Retiring and transferring employees take their valuable operational knowledge with them.

Technical Toolboxes helps you retain important information about the design, construction, operation, and integrity management, independent of any individual employee, making onboarding new employees easier.

SOP Alignment

Teams interpret SOPs differently, causing errors and duplicating workloads.

Technical Toolboxes integrates your databases and brings your operations into a unified set of Standard Operating Procedures and Engineering Standards.

Tools for AC Mitigation

PRCI AC Mitigation Toolbox

The PRCI AC Mitigation Toolbox for pipelines helps users understand, model, and mitigate AC-induced integrity problems. Using the information gathered from the software, engineers, and technicians can create models to mitigate or modify the design of pipeline cathodic protection (CP) systems enabling the reduction of AC density effects, helping users meet the criteria specified either by a client or by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) standard.

Technical Toolboxes has integrated the ACTB within the Pipeline HUB platform, allowing it to share data with other applications on the platform, including the geospatial analysis tool. Therefore, users can identify locations, soils, and other factors in pipelining projects quickly and easily.

AC Mitigation PowerTool

The AC Mitigation PowerTool (ACPT) from Technical Toolboxes is one of the easiest tools for assessing AC corrosion on pipelines. Because of its intuitive nature, engineers can generate mitigation scenarios and solutions in minutes to reduce the effects of high-current densities from the inductive effects of the AC loads on the tower lines. ACPT enables engineers to meet national standards and industry standards while delivering the highest-quality information and productivity rates.

Frequently
Asked
Questions

Yes. The model considers areas with variable depth of cover, such as HDD crossings and other areas of concern in the pipeline lifecycle.

Apparent resistivity considers the surface to a depth of 6 meters or 20 feet as most towers and substations have grounding down to this depth. During AC fault conditions, the calculations take these values to assess the effects of the voltages on the coating of the pipeline. In addition, the surface, step, and touch potentials are calculated for the safety of personnel working nearby.

Yes. With the GIS integration offered by Technical Toolboxes, the three types of mitigation in the mitigation design portion of PRCI’s AC Mitigation Toolbox are shown on the map. If all three, or only two, are used for a section, each will be displayed. You have a map of the affected areas and you can select pipe sections in your network for individual analysis.
